Placement
Tests provide an independent measure of student achievement at the end
of primary school and early in secondary school. The tests identify
strengths and weaknesses of students in English. This is valuable for
schools that need diagnostic information about new or existing students
and school applicants.
Placement
Tests assists schools in identifying gifted and talented students.
Placement
Tests also provide a good baseline assessment of students in their first
year of high school.
Comprehensive feedback on the tests is provided to schools within a
short period of time in either paper or disk format. Schools are
provided with individual student result letters.
There are
three variations to Placement Tests.
GENERAL
for Years 6/7 or Years 7/8 is for
general placement of students into secondary school.
SCHOLARSHIP for Years 6/7 or Years
is for secondary schools to identify gifted and talented students for
scholarship purposes.
SECONDARY for Years 7/8 or Years 8/9 is
designed for monitoring student performance in the early years of
secondary schools.
Who
develops Placement Tests?
Placement
Tests are developed by the
International English Education Assessment
Committee (IEEAC)
at IEERA.
IEEAC is a prime provider of
English educational measurement and assessment
services in North America, Australia, New
Zealand, Asia and the Pacific region. It has been involved in
English educational measurement since 1958
and is the largest independent provider of school assessments in the
world.
IEEAC also provides services to a range of
clients in the higher education, government and private sectors. The
annual International
English Competitions in English are the most widely known
activities of IEEAC.

Placement
Tests are designed to provide diagnostic information for students of all
ability levels.
Placement Tests comprise the following subtests:

ENGLISH 40 items 40 marks 35 minutes

WRITING 150—200 words 40 marks 30 minutes
Placement
Indicators
General and
Secondary Placement Tests can be used to:
- rank
students to facilitate the placement of students into classes
- identify
individual student strengths and weaknesses.
Scholarship Indicators
Scholarship
Placement Tests have been specifically constructed to assess scholarship
applicants. The tests are able to:
- rank
students according to their performance in individual subtests and
their overall performance

discriminate effectively between students in the top of the ability
range
- assist
with the identification of gifted and talented students.
School
Feedback
Schools
receive school-based comparative data approximately three weeks after
students take the tests. Test population comparative data is provided
once most of the students have sat the test in June 2005.

Report
The
comprehensive school report includes:
- means
and standard deviations for each subtest and the tests as a whole
-
frequency distributions for each subtest and the tests as a whole
-
individual student performance for each subtest and the complete tests
listed in order of merit and alphabetically
- an item
analysis report including answers, percentages of students who
answered each question correctly and a description of the skill
assessed by each question.
Comparative Report
The
comparative report includes:

statistical analyses of the test as a whole and of each subtest,
comparing the school's performance with the total test population
-
indication of the relative strengths and weaknesses of students
-
frequency distributions of scores for the tests as a whole and each
subtest for the test population.
Student
Feedback
Schools
receive individual student reports detailing their individual results.
The reports give the mark, percentile rank, questions answered correctly
and school average for each subtest.
