What skills
are being assessed?
The
International English Competitions provide
opportunities for students to demonstrate their potential and ability. Within
each Competition the assessment covers a wide range of skills.
Skills being
assessed
English:
- reading
comprehension across both literary and factual texts
- a wide
range of genre (e.g. arguments, descriptions and/or narratives)
- a wide range
of text types (e.g. poetry, letters and/or advertisements)
- language
skills
- spelling
- genre
awareness and understanding
- textual
characteristics
- sentence
structure and expression
- grammar
- punctuation
What do we
get from the Competitions?
Participating students
Each student receives:
- a test
booklet in full colour to keep - supplied by their school after Competition
results are released
- a diagnostic
report on performance
- a
Certificate indicating the achieved level of success
The diagnostic
report provides valuable feedback to the students, parents and teacher. It
indicates which questions the student has answered correctly and incorrectly,
the skills demonstrated and the comparative difficulty of each question.
More
specifically, the report itemises:
- the
student's answer
- the correct
answer
- the skill
that each question assesses
- the
percentage of state-wide participating students that have answered each
questions correctly.
Participating schools
Each school
receives a confidential report containing valuable information and statistics.
The information
from the school report is particularly useful for teachers and principals to:
- compare
their school's performance with the rest of their state
ascertain areas of
strength and weakness within the school and reflect on teaching and learning
programs accordingly
- create
additional programs that are more challenging for higher achieving students
- identity
students who may require focused teaching or remedial programs.
The school
report is strictly confidential and is not used to report to government
departments or to compare individual schools' performances with other schools.
This year,
IEEAC will select a few schools and arrange for
photographs to be taken of students receiving their medals and awards. All
photographs will be made available to the successful student and school. They
may be used in future IEERA publications, following
normal permission procedures and subject to current privacy legislation.
Awards
Certificates
All students who enter the IEEAC Competitions receive
a Certificate
.
The Certificate
is awarded on the following basis for each subject assessed:
- High
Distinction (the top 1% of entrants in each year level in the state)
- Distinction
(the next 10% of entrants in each year level in the state)
- Credit (the
next 20% of entrants in each year level in the state)
- Achievement
(students placed within the top 20% of their school, but who have not qualified
for a state Certificate)
-
Participation (all other participation students)
Medals
Prestigious
medals with the IEERA logo are awarded in each subject
to students in each state who achieve the highest score in each year level for
each subject assessed.
The student's
name, year level, subject and the year of Competition are engraved on the medal.
Who benefits
from the Competition?
Students
The diagnostic
report enables students to:
- indentify
personal strengths and weaknesses
- compare
their achievement with the rest of their state
- monitor
individual progress from year to year
- celebrate
success through receiving a Certificate.
The diagnostic
report is particularly valuable for providing an independent result of
assessment in specific Key Learning Areas for students at all levels of
achievement.
By participating
in the Competitions, students are better prepared for state-based tests.
Students can also monitor their progress from year to year and gain valuable
experience in sitting external tests.
Additionally,
the student's report and Certificate are highly suitable for inclusion in a
portfolio which could be used when applying for scholarships, transferring to
new schools and even for applying for first jobs.
Parents
In addition to above, parents can use the diagnostic report to discuss the
student's performance with teachers and thereby contribute to the development of
an individual learning program for their child.
Schools
The confidential statistics report enables schools to:
- identify
strengths and weaknesses in their students' performances
- compare
their students' achievements with the rest of their state
- examine
strengths and weaknesses in their school-based curriculum
- consider the
allocation of resources to support the curriculum
Teachers
In addition to
the above, teachers can use the statistical reports to:
- monitor
individual student progress
- modify their
classroom activities to cater for the individual and/or group needs of their
students.
