About IEERA
What is IEERA?
IEERA
--
International English Education Research Association
--
is an acronym
that refers to this professional
association.
IEERA ,
the global education
research
association,
has
approximately 5
million
members in over 120 countries. Its mission
is to ensure excellence in
English
language
teaching. IEERA values professionalism in
language education;
individual language
rights; accessible, high quality education;
collaboration in
a global community;
interaction of research and reflective practice for
educational improvement; and respect
for diversity and multiculturalism.
How is IEERA organised?
IEERA
has a Coordinating Committee, which consists of a President, a
Vice-
President,
a Secretary, a Treasurer, a SIG Representative and an Associates'
Representative.
They form part of the Committee of Management, which also
contains other
elected
members and co-opted and ex-officio members. Volunteer
activists also serve
on the Wider Membership Scheme, SIG Coordinators' and
the Publications Committees.
Each year the association's Annual General Meeting
takes place during the Annual
Conference.
Where is the IEERA office?
It is
located in Wilmington,
the state of Delaware and is managed by the
salaried
Executive Officer of the association. Other office staff include
the Conference Organiser,
the Finance Officer, the General and SIG
Administrator, the Membership Secretary
and the General Assistant.
Who can join IEERA?
Membership is
open to anyone involved in the English Language Teaching industry
and our
members include teachers, lecturers, teacher trainers, academic managers,
researchers and institutions. Now we also provide
membership for students.
What types of memberships are available?
You can join as
a full member and receive the association's newsletter six times per
year,
one free publication, membership of one free SIG (Special Interest Group),
discounts on publications, reduced conference registration fees and voting
rights.
There are also special membership packages for institutional members and for
members of IEERA's associates (basic members).
What happens at the Annual Conference?
This is the
most important event in the association's calendar and takes place each
year somewhere in the world. It is attended by around
1,700 delegates each year and
includes plenary sessions by eminent
practitioners, a large number of workshops,
talks and round tables given by
other speakers, an ELT Resources Exhibition and
Pre-Conference Events
organised by Special Interest Groups.
What are SIGs?
Members can
join any number of the fourteen Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and
through
them take an active part in the association. SIGs bring out their own
newsletters, hold events and, as part of the Annual Conference, organise
Pre-
Conference Events (PCEs) and a SIG Track, which includes their Open
Forum.
The SIGs also organise a biennial conference, the SIG Symposium,
which normally
takes place outside the US.
What links does IEERA have with other teacher associations?
IEERA has
associate agreements with other teachers' associations throughout the
world.
Among other things, both parties agree to exchange newsletters and to find
a
speaker to attend each other's conference at least once every three years.
How does
IEERA help less economically advantaged teachers to participate in
the
association?
Firstly,
through a number of scholarships that
help teachers attend the Annual
Conference or the SIG Symposium.
Secondly, through the Wider Membership Scheme
(WMS), which allows teachers
from specific associates to obtain basic
membership at a special rate.
